How are Rocks and Minerals Used?
Students compare rocks and minerals and explore similarities, difference and uses in everyday life.

Materials:
- Look at the optional portion at the bottom of the materials section. Refer students to the Bibliography on pages 153-154 to take a look at the suggested titles.
Student Management:
- Have clear criteria for student projects before they begin, so they know what they need to include.
- Make sure you give them adequate time to complete the project.
- This lesson takes longer than one science block.
- If students are having a hard time finding information, teachers can create Mineral Information cards using this information, following the format of the Rock Information cards that are provided. Begin searching for these materials at the beginning of the unit. Don’t forget to use the internet!
- PREPARATION #1
- Copy and laminate six copies of the Rock Information cards on a different color. These can then be used year after year.
- PROCEDURE #5
- This is a great time to review the Speaking and Listening EALRs for the students to work on as the reports are presented.
Writing Support:
- Students will prepare and share reports on specific rocks and minerals.
Reading Support:
- Students will read and research information to learn more about how rocks and minerals are used.
Math Support:
- Complete the Rocks and Minerals Venn Diagram for the unit.
- Create a table, chart or graph to display information learned about the rock or mineral of their choice.
