3. Lesson set up and Management

Materials:

The boxes should be prepared ahead of time. These boxes can then be used as an extension, for those who finish early, or as a teacher demonstration.

Student Management:

Let students play with the materials for a limited time. Remind students when it is time to begin recording the results of their testing for magnetic properties.

Here is an opportunity to downplay student embarrassment at having “guessed wrong”. Instead, emphasize the importance of learning something new.

Writing Support:

Students will make a chart in their notebooks to record data.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to think about the names objects have and the origins of words such as “metallic”.
