Chemical Tests
Lesson 12
Identifying the Unknown Solids
Students compare the information to a reliable source of outside data to discover the unknowns' identities.
3. Lesson set up and Management
GLE 2.1.4 Understand how to construct a reasonable explanation using evidence (3) Generate a scientific explanation or conclusion using data.
- Students will compare their test data with a reliable source of information to identify the unknowns.
3. Lesson set up and Management
Materials:
- Copy the article "Chemicals Are All around Us" from the Teacher's Guide. There is not a copy in the Student Activity Book.
- This is a great time to review inquiry and scientific method with the students since they will be coming to conclusions today. Relate each step of the scientific method to what they have done throughout the unit.
Writing Support:
- Students will record the identities of the five unknowns on Record Sheet 12-A. Students will write in their notebooks about the following:
- Did the identities surprise you?
- How did your predictions compare with your discoveries?
- Which test results were the best clues for helping you identify the unknown?
- What do you know about each unknown that you did not know before?
- Students can practice writing conclusion using their test results to support their thinking.
Reading Support:
- Students will read about how the five chemicals they have been testing are used in everyday life in the reading selection "Chemicals All Around Us."
- In the extension activities it is suggested to point out books listed in the bibliography students can read about chemistry and chemicals.
Math Support:
- As students analyze results to support their conclusion they can add mathematical information to their writing (example - 5 of the 6 test I completed led me to this conclusion). They can work on including high and low data.
