Properties of Matter
Part 2: Mixtures and Solutions
What Happens When Substances Are Mixed With Water?
Students mix several substances with water and begin to determine the properties of solutions.
PS2A Use characteristic intrinsic properties such as…solubility…to identify an unknown substance.
- When water is added to a substance, some substances remain the same, while other substances dissolve.
- Inquiry 12.1: The rubber stoppers that come with the kit may be size 00. If so, students may inadvertently push the stoppers too far into the test tubes. You will have to break the tubes to remove the stoppers. If possible, use size 0 stoppers.
- Inquiry 12.1: Procedure step 5 uses a non-traditional method to measure water. It may be helpful to have students use 10mL of water since water is not typically measured in centimeters. Also, you may want to model how to hold the test tube with your thumb on the stopper while shaking.

- Dissolving History: This reading is a social studies connection as well as a discussion of environmental implications.
