Solids & Liquids
Investigation 1
Part 2
Sort Solid Objects
Students sort a set of solid objects in a variety of ways to discover similarities among the solids. (from the FOSS teacher guide, 2002 edition)
3. Lesson set up and Management
- PC01 1.1.1 Use properties to sort natural and manufactured materials and objects, for example size, weight, shape, color, texture, and hardness.
- PC02 1.1.4 Observe and examine physical properties of earth materials such as rocks and soil, water (as liquid, solid, and vapor) and the gases of the atmosphere.
- IP03 2.1.3 Use data to construct reasonable explanation.
- IP05 2.1.5 Record and report observations, explanations, and conclusions using oral and written expression.
- IP07 2.2.2 Design and test a solution to a problem.
- Solids can be sorted by their properties.
- We use our senses to observe the properties of solids.
- Solid materials have properties that separate them from other states of matter.
3. Lesson set up and Management
Materials:
- Write key vocabulary words on sentence strips to use in a pocket chart to review properties.
- Write in students' names and run off Assessment Checklists #2 & 3. If you have to make a choice on assessments, do the ones for the EALRs with only one investigation.
- Copy student sheet #3 and make a transparency of it.
Student Management:
- Pair students together for the sorting game.
- Have student passers pass out the materials and collect them.
- Have an interactive sorting while using the overhead. Ask questions to expand thinking about properties.
Demonstrate the Sorting Game on the overhead. Model the oral description of shared properties. Assign partners and explain how to play the game.
HELPFUL TIPS
- Only use one baggie of solids between partners. They can take turns sorting with each other.
WRAP-UP/CLOSING
- Have students line up materials on desk. Call out each material and have students place it in the baggie. Ask student passers to pick up materials.
- Make new word bank entries.
- Make entries to the "What We Learned" Chart and add to the "Questions I Have" Chart. As students find answers to their questions, add the answers to the "What We Learned" Chart and check off the question as answered. In addition to checking off answered questions, continue to add new questions as students continue to wonder about the phenomena they are observing.
ASSESSMENT
Use Student Sheet #3 to assess whether student can sort solids and name the property/ies by which they were sorted. See the scoring guide on page 12 of the Assessment section. Mark your Assessment Checklist under the correct column.
Writing Support:
Draw a picture and write 3-5 sentences describing how two solids are alike. Use vocabulary to describe what properties they share.
Math:
Use yarn to make two overlapping circles on the floor. Introduce Venn Diagrams to the class. Choose a color for one side and a shape for the other side. Sort solid objects found in the classroom by those properties.
Vocabulary:
Cylinder
