The room should be humming with inquisitive questions and the buzz of excitement when students discover new things. Let the students share their ideas with you, but also let them know to allow their partner and others in the class to experiment too. The room should be pleasantly loud.

Should I keep the lesson moving along to make it fit within the manual’s scheduled 50 minutes?

Answer:

You can keep it moving along, as long as the students are comfortable. Keep a constant eye out for teachable moments and go with them. You can always finish the lesson another day. Keep in mind that this unit is a discovery unit, so allow the students to discover on their own. You'll be amazed at what the students can teach you!
