Microworlds
Lesson 4
Looking through Lenses
Students will look at common objects that they have brought to class, using the shapes from last lesson. At the end of the lesson, they will take a quiz on what they have learned so far in the unit.
3. Lesson Set-up and Management
4-5 INQD Investigations involve systematic collection and recording of relevant observations and data.
- Students will have more experiences with magnifying lenses and the properties of those lenses.
- Students will become aware of focusing objects and field of view.
- Teacher will evaluate student progress.
3. Lesson Set-Up and Management
Materials:
- Students are to bring objects from home to look at using the magnifiers from the unit. If students forget, there are many things in a classroom that they can look at. See the first page of this lesson in the teacher’s guide.
- You will need to photocopy the activity sheet. This is not something that can easily be created in their notebooks.
- For the assessment portion of this lesson, you will need to hand out a colored marble for each student to look at. There are only 15 in the kit, so you will need to walk those around to students.
Student Management:
- Students will be using the acrylic shapes again for this lesson. Make sure that you count those when students return them.
- For the actual exploration time (procedures step 4), student guidelines are found on page 9 of the Student Activity Book.
- Be prepared with classroom items for students to look at, if they did not bring anything from home.
- Activity Sheet 4 is a formative assessment at the end of this lesson. For ELL students, teachers have found the sheet helpful as a student interview.
Reading Support:
- Students can study the Reading Selection about microscopes from the Student Activity Book on page 11. This could be done when they finish the quiz and to pique their interest in upcoming lessons.
