Crayfish in the Classroom
Dear Investigators and Collaborators, Thank you for your interest in the first-ever study assessing the feasibility of native crayfish use in the classroom. We have developed a research study that aims to compare the survival and behavior of native signal crayfish and non-native red swamp crayfish. This complements the planned transition to the exclusive use of native crayfish in 2011. It is an exciting endeavor. The documents supporting the pilot study have been designed for distribution to teachers: The summary document can be used to invite teachers to participate, and the protocol and data documents provide detailed instructions, once a teacher agrees. If the attached documents do not answer all of your questions, please email me. The next step is to get commitments from teachers to participate in the study. We are looking for teachers to collect data on either native crayfish, non-native crayfish, or both. This is described in the summary document. So please consider assigning teachers equally between the crayfish species. We need to keep track of the total number of teachers participating in the study. This is important especially for WDFW. If possible, please keep me updated on the number and species of crawfish used by teachers participating in each school district or ESD. Thank you.. We truly appreciate your efforts! Julian D.
