2. Information on the Center

North East Washington Science Education Resource Center (NEWSERC) is housed at ESD 101 in Spokane.

ESD 101 is the largest, geographically, of the nine ESD regions in Washington. There is vast diversity in size and geographic isolation among districts. The main goal of NEWSERC is to provide high quality materials and professional development science education resources to all schools in the ESD region both large and small.

Educational Service District 101 and nine school districts have formed the Northeast Washington LASER Alliance to support K-12 science education in the ESD 101 region. Those same districts will form a materials refurbishment cooperative housed at ESD 101. Although NEWSERC is starting with nine districts it is hoped that many more will soon join as their circumstances permit.

In year one of operation, NEWSERC will support 100 teachers in grades K-6 Foss physical science kits implementation through providing professional development, purchasing and refurbishment services, and teacher leader development. Year two will serve 200 teachers and will provide support for implementation of earth science and physical science kits.

5. Professional Development Trainings

The initial kit trainings the Northeast Washington LASER Alliance are designed to address the attributes of high quality science teachers. The Alliance started in 2005 offering three levels of physical trainings and then added the earth science trainings in 2006-2007 and in 2007-2008 will add the life science trainings. The K-6 professional development workshops Northeast LASER Alliance will offer during the 2007-2009 are shown in Table 1.
