Washington State LASER (Leadership and Assistance for Science Education Reform), CityClub, Pacific Science Center, and The Boeing Company are pleased to invite you to lunch and forum to discuss STEM Education, the new "buzz word" for preparing our youth to be competitive in this technology-based society.  But what do we mean by STEM?  We know what each individual word means - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.  But what does it look like in and out of the classroom when you combine them all with the word "Education?"  Does it mean strong programs in each subject area or an integration of the topics - or something in-between?

The annual Science Champions: Science Education Advocate awards go to five individuals or organizations who exhibited outstanding advocacy for science education in the state of Washington. Please join this year's Science Champions in a discussion of their perspectives on STEM Education.

The 2009-2010 recipients are:

Dr. Peter Dallas Finch

Assistant Superintendent, West Valley School District, Yakima

 Dr. Danny Grünbaum
Associate Professor of Biological Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle

Dr. Stamatis Vokos

Professor of Physics,Seattle Pacific University, Seattle

Heritage High School Energy Smart

Evergreen School District, Vancouver

Science Education Partnership

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle

The five awardees receive $5,000 each to be awarded to the not-for-profit organization or public education entity of their choice for use in its efforts on behalf of science education. The monetary reward as well as funding for the awards process was generously provided by the Boeing Company.

We hope that you will be able to join us and congratulate our 2009-2010 Science Champions: Science Education Advocate Award winners.

Sincerely,
