Who should be on a district's leadership team?

Who should be on the team?

All school districts that apply for participation in the Institute must identify a five-person leadership team.

Team members must demonstrate that they collectively have the skills, commitment, and credibility to lead a science education reform initiative in their community.

School districts with fewer than 5,000 students are encouraged to form a consortium with a neighboring district and apply as a single team. Alternatively, such a district may request to be represented by a three- or four-person team. We recommend that teams represent no more than three school districts.

Each team should include:

  • A superintendent of schools or an assistant superintendent.
  • A science coordinator or director of curriculum and instruction.
  • An experienced elementary, middle school and/or high school teacher with demonstrated leadership skills.
  • A scientist from a local business, college or university, or museum who will work with the district to develop community support for science education reform.
