Dr. Michael Klentschy’s Inquiry in Action for K - 8 Building Administrators

Made possible by generous support from MerckMerck Logo

Washington State LASER with generous support from Merck Institute for Science Education is sponsoring Dr. Michael Klentschys' "Inquiry in Action for K-8 Building Administrators." This is a one-day workshop offered on four dates and in four locations around the state.

In an era of standards, assessment, and accountability, science is often neglected or seen as a subject to be squeezed in whenever possible. At the same time, many states are calling for reform to increase the number of students taking challenging high school courses leading to higher enrollment at the post secondary level in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-related majors.

The purpose of this all-day event for superintendents, central office administrators, and principals is to:

  • Provide participants with research and context related to the importance of science in the K-8 classroom, and the potential it has to help students attain a high degree of success in math and science at the high school level.
  • Provide participants with first-hand experiences with high-quality instructional materials through engaging in inquiry-based lessons as a learner.
  • Observe effective classroom practices through video segments of classroom teachers implementing instructional best practices in science education.
  • Provide participants with observational feedback tools for use with their classroom teachers.
  • Provide participants with a toolkit of best practices designed to engage staff, define roles, and to receive data on program assessment and student achievement.
