Nomination and Submission Process

The Nomination period for 2012-2013 is closed. Recipients of this year's awards will be posted soon.

Nomination Process - Nominators need to follow these four steps:

1. Head Nominator: View the checklist and tips for the head nominator. Complete the Science Champions: Science Education Advocate Awards Nomination Form and if you choose, one of the letters of recommendation.*

2. Secure two additional Letters of Recommendation, if you are writing a letter, three if you are not, from individuals who are familiar with the nominees' science advocacy efforts.*

3. Nominee will complete their Personal Statement Form, which can be downloaded in PDF format or in WORD format.

4. Head Nominator: Ensure that all paperwork (nomination form, personal statement, and all 3 nomination Letters of Recommendation) is submitted to Science Champions: Science Education Advocate Awards no later than January 28, 2013. (See below for sending options.)

Criteria for Letters of Recommendation

  • At least one letter of recommendation of the three should come from an individual who has seen the effects of the nominee's advocacy from within the science education environment (e.g. a teacher, science education researcher, informal science educator, outreach coordinator of an organization, radio commentator, newspaper writer, community member, etc.).
  • At least one letter of recommendation should come from an individual in the greater community who has seen the effects of the nominee's advocacy from outside the education arena (e.g. politicians, research scientists, parents of students, business leaders).
  • Recommendations for nominated organizations must come from individuals whose primary function does not take place with the organization.
  • Letters of recommendation, on letterhead if possible, are not to exceed two pages, and should address the following:
     
    1. The recommender's relationship to the nominee
    2. A description of the nominee's primary job function
    3. The specific advocacy efforts undertaken by the nominee leading to the recommendation may include, but are not limited to, the following:
      • promoting the importance of science education among the general public
      • seeking out and engaging new and diverse participants and/or investors in science education
      • enabling and influencing others to act in the interests of science education and/or its reform
      • making enhancements to science education by efforts at local, regional and/or state level in Washington
 

*Please note: Pacific Science Center Board members and LASER Steering Committee members (or the organizations they represent) may not be nominees for the current year’s Science Education Advocate awards. They also may not be a nominator but may help support the nomination of an individual, organization and/or project team.

Use one of the methods listed below:

Please include the nominee's name in the subject head of all emails.
